  Steel Manufacturing Plant - South-East

  • Demolished a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant
  • ACM and universal waste abatement
  • Control dropped a 200’ tall refractory furnace
  • Placement of an earthen dike along the impact zone

VIASANT was selected to demolish a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant at this active steel manufacturing facility, including a 200’ tall refractory furnace, 144,000cf oxygen furnace and other large structures.

Pre-demolition activities included ACM and universal waste abatement. Neighboring industrial and residential structures were video surveyed prior to demolition activities to document pre-existing structural conditions as part of overall seismic monitoring and analysis.

Following development of critical lift plans, 8’ diameter ductwork was sectioned and lowered by 75-ton crane. The refractory furnace was controlled dropped utilizing shape charges and other engineering and secondary safety controls to protect active power lines and a power control building located within 10 feet of the drop zone.

Additional controls included the placement of an earthen dike along the impact zone to absorb the impact of the largest vessel. Seismic equipment and personnel monitored the impact zone to document compliance with residential seismic disturbance standards.

VIASANT crews removed 3,000 tons of steel and prepared all scrap to a 3’ minus mill spec. All castable and refractory brick was transported by VIASANT and placed in a designated area for temporary storage at the plant.

All construction and demolition debris, including 3,000 tons of waste, was transported and disposed off-site.
